Different fractions can name the same amount. Knowing this helps you compare, simplify and add fractions.
🍕 Making equivalent fractions
Multiply or divide the top (numerator) and the bottom (denominator) by the same number and the value stays the same. Dividing both by a common factor is called simplifying.
1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8
3/5 = 12/20 (multiply both by 4)
18/24 = 9/12 = 3/4 (divide both by 6)
🖼️ See it
The shaded part is the same size in every bar, so 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8.
⚖️ Comparing fractions
To compare fractions with different denominators, change them to a common denominator first. Then the fraction with the bigger numerator is bigger.
3/4 vs 2/3
3/4 = 9/12 and 2/3 = 8/12
9/12 > 8/12, so 3/4 > 2/3
Bigger denominator means smaller pieces. 1/8 is smaller than 1/4.

⚖️ Ratio & Proportion
A ratio compares two amounts. Proportion means keeping the same ratio when amounts get bigger or smaller.
⚖️ Writing ratios
A ratio compares quantities using a colon. If there are 2 red counters and 3 blue counters, the ratio of red to blue is 2 : 3. You can simplify ratios by dividing both numbers by a common factor.
red : blue = 2 : 3
4 : 6 = 2 : 3 (divide both by 2)
12 girls : 8 boys = 3 : 2
🖼️ See it
Top: 2 red to 3 blue counters. Bottom: $20 shared 1 : 4. Add the parts to find how many shares there are. $20 ÷ 5 parts = $4 a part, so the shares are $4 and $16.
🍰 Proportion and sharing
In a proportion problem, scale both parts by the same number. To share in a ratio, add the parts, find the value of one part, then multiply.
Recipe: 2 cups flour to 1 cup sugar
for 6 cups flour: multiply by 3 → 3 cups sugar
Share $20 in the ratio 1 : 4
parts = 5, one part = $4, shares = $4 and $16

💯 Percentages of Quantities
A percentage is a fraction out of 100. We can find a percentage of an amount and use it for discounts.
💯 Fractions, decimals and percentages
The same amount can be written three ways. Percentages are used everywhere: scores, discounts and statistics.
Learn these and you can find most percentages quickly.10% of $50 is $5, so 20% is $10. Take the discount away: $50 − $10 = $40.
🧮 Finding a percentage of an amount
Find 10% by dividing by 10, and 1% by dividing by 100. Build other percentages from these.
10% of 60 = 6

🗺️ Coordinates & Reflections
Coordinates describe exactly where a point is. A reflection flips a shape across a mirror line.
📍 Four-quadrant coordinates
A point is written (x, y). Go across first (x) and then up or down (y). The axes meet at the origin (0, 0) and split the grid into four quadrants. Negative x is left and negative y is down.
Go across first (x), then up or down (y). Left and down are negative. Each point lands the same distance from the mirror line on the other side. The x-coordinate changes sign.
🪞 Reflections
When a point is reflected in a mirror line, it is the same distance from the line on the other side. Reflecting in the y-axis changes the sign of x. Reflecting in the x-axis changes the sign of y.
(3, 2) reflected in the y-axis → (-3, 2)
(4, 1) reflected in the x-axis → (4, -1)
(-2, -3) reflected in the x-axis → (-2, 3)
The shape stays the same size. A reflection only flips it.

✖️ Multiples, Factors & Divisibility
Multiples and factors are two sides of the times tables. Quick divisibility tests tell you whether a number shares exactly, without dividing.
✖️ Multiples and factors
A multiple of a number is in its times table: the multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, … A factor divides into a number exactly. Factors come in pairs that multiply to the number. A common multiple is in both times tables.
Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42
Factors of 20: 1 × 20, 2 × 10, 4 × 5 → 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20

🔍 Divisibility tests
A number divides exactly by 2 if its last digit is even, by 5 if it ends in 0 or 5, and by 10 if it ends in 0. It divides by 3 if the sum of its digits divides by 3.
134 → ends in 4 → divides by 2
85 → ends in 5 → divides by 5
123 → 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 → divides by 3

📊 Bar Charts, Mode & Median
A frequency table and a bar chart turn a pile of answers into a clear picture. The mode and median sum up the data in one number.
📊 Frequency tables and bar charts
A frequency table records how many times each answer occurs, often using tally marks. A bar chart shows each frequency as a bar. Bars have equal widths with gaps between them, the axes are labelled, and the scale goes up in equal steps from zero.
Dogs have the tallest bar, so “dog” is the mode. There are 25 pets in total.
🎯 Mode, median and range
The mode is the most common value: the tallest bar. The median is the middle value when the data is in order. The range is the largest value minus the smallest, and shows how spread out the data is.
Shoe sizes: 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 6
mode = 6 (appears 3 times)
median = 5 (the 4th of 7 values)
range = 6 − 3 = 3

🪞 Symmetry & Translations
A symmetrical shape has two matching halves. A translation slides a shape to a new place without changing it.
🪞 Lines of symmetry
A line of symmetry splits a shape into two halves that are mirror images. Fold along it and the halves match exactly. A regular shape has as many lines of symmetry as it has sides.
Every corner moves 3 squares right. The triangle keeps its size, shape and direction.
➡️ Translations
A translation slides a shape left or right and up or down. Every corner moves by the same amount, and the shape keeps its size, shape and direction. On a grid, right adds to the x-coordinate and up adds to the y-coordinate.

⏱️ Measures & Time
Metric units all work in tens, hundreds and thousands. Time is different: it works in 60s and 24s.
📏 Converting metric units
1 km = 1000 m, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 litre = 1000 ml. To change to a smaller unit, multiply; to change to a bigger unit, divide.
3.5 m = 3.5 × 100 = 350 cm
4500 m = 4500 ÷ 1000 = 4.5 km
2 litres − 750 ml = 2000 − 750 = 1250 ml
🖼️ See it
Multiply to change to a smaller unit; divide to change to a bigger one.20 + 60 + 15 = 95 minutes. Count up to the next hour first.

There are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. The 24-hour clock counts afternoon hours on from 12: 3 p.m. is 15:00. To find how long something takes, count up to the next hour first.
10:40 → 11:00 = 20 min
