Read the digits by their place. In 3.47 the 4 is worth 4 tenths (0.4), not 4 ones.
🖼️ See it
3.47 = 3 ones + 4 tenths + 7 hundredths. The 4 is worth 0.4, not 4.Each bar is one whole. 8 tenths fill more of the bar than 75 hundredths, so 0.8 is greater.
⚖️ Comparing and adding decimals
To compare decimals, line up the decimal points and compare digit by digit from the left. To add or subtract, line up the points and work as with whole numbers.
0.8 vs 0.75 → 0.80 vs 0.75 → 0.8 is greater
2.5 + 1.75 = 4.25
5.00 − 2.35 = 2.65
More digits does not mean bigger. 0.8 is greater than 0.75 because 8 tenths beats 7 tenths.

💯 Percentages & Rounding
A percentage is a number out of 100. Rounding gives a simpler number that is close to the exact one.
💯 Percent means per hundred
Percent (%) means “out of 100”. Some percentages are easy to remember: 50% is a half, 25% is a quarter and 10% is a tenth.
Percent means out of 100. 50% is a half, 25% is a quarter and 10% is a tenth of the whole bar.467 is closer to 470 than to 460. A 5 or more in the ones place rounds up.
🎯 Rounding
To round, look at the digit to the right of the place you are rounding to. If it is 5 or more, round up. If it is 4 or less, round down.
Some problems need more than one calculation. Break them into small steps and check that your answer makes sense.
📝 Read, plan, solve, check
First read and find the question. Then plan which operations to use and in what order. Solve one step at a time and finally check the answer.

step 1: 4 × 12 = 48
step 2: 48 − 7 = 41
🖼️ See it
4 boxes of 12 apples, 7 eaten: step 1 is 4 × 12 = 48, step 2 is 48 − 7 = 41 apples left.

📐 Angles
An angle measures a turn. We measure angles in degrees (°) using a protractor.
📐 Types of angle
A right angle is exactly 90°. An acute angle is less than 90°. An obtuse angle is between 90° and 180°. A straight angle is 180°.
acute: 0° to 90° right: 90°
obtuse: 90° to 180° straight: 180°
full turn: 360° half turn: 180° quarter turn: 90°
🖼️ See it
Acute is less than 90°, a right angle is exactly 90°, obtuse is between 90° and 180°, and a straight angle is 180°.
📏 Using a protractor
Place the centre mark of the protractor on the point where the two arms meet (the vertex). Line up one arm with the 0° line and read where the other arm crosses the scale.
angles on a straight line add to 180°
if one angle is 70°, the other is 180 − 70 = 110°
the two angles in a right angle add to 90°

📈 Line Graphs
A line graph shows how something changes over time. Reading it well tells you the story behind the numbers.
📈 Parts of a line graph
Every line graph has a title, two axes with labels and a scale. Time usually goes along the bottom (horizontal) axis. Points are joined by a line to show the trend.
line goes up → the amount is increasing
line goes down → the amount is decreasing
flat line → no change
🖼️ See it
The line goes up, so the plant is growing. From week 1 to week 3 it grew 11 − 4 = 7 cm.
🔍 Reading values and trends
To read a value, go up from the time on the bottom axis to the point, then across to the scale. To find a change, subtract the smaller reading from the larger one.
Plant height: week 1 = 4 cm, week 2 = 7 cm, week 3 = 11 cm
growth from week 1 to week 3 = 11 − 4 = 7 cm
Check the scale first. If each square is worth 2, a point 3 squares up is 6, not 3.

🍕 Fractions
Sharing a pizza fairly is all about fractions. The bottom number says how many equal parts, and the top says how many you have.
🍰 Parts of a whole
A fraction is part of a whole. The denominator (bottom) tells how many equal parts there are. The numerator (top) tells how many parts you have.
3/4 means 3 out of 4 equal parts
1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 (these are equivalent)
3/8 is bigger than 1/8: same size parts, more of them
🍪 A fraction of a number
To find a fraction of a number, divide by the bottom, then multiply by the top.

Lesson 10 · Measurement
⚖️ Length, Mass & Capacity
We measure how long, how heavy and how much a container holds. Choosing the right unit and reading the scale carefully are the key skills.
📏 Units to know
Length is measured in millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m) and kilometres (km). Mass (how heavy) is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg). Capacity (how much a container holds) is measured in millilitres (ml) and litres (l).
1 m = 100 cm 1 km = 1000 m
1 kg = 1000 g 1 litre = 1000 ml
pencil ≈ 15 cm, apple ≈ 150 g, cup ≈ 250 ml
🖼️ See it
There are 10 spaces between 0 and 100, so each mark is worth 10 g.
🔎 Reading scales
Before reading a scale, work out what each small mark is worth: divide the gap between two numbers by the number of spaces. Then count the marks from the last number.
0 to 100 g with 10 spaces → each mark is 10 g
0 to 1 litre with 4 spaces → each mark is 250 ml
3 m = 300 cm 2 kg = 2000 g
Count the spaces, not the lines, when you work out what each mark is worth.

📋 Pictograms, Bar Charts, Venn & Carroll Diagrams
Charts and sorting diagrams turn lists of information into pictures you can read at a glance.
📊 Pictograms and bar charts
A pictogram uses symbols. The key tells you what one symbol is worth, and half a symbol is worth half as much. A bar chart uses bars against a scale that starts at zero and goes up in equal steps.
key: ★ = 4 children
★★★ = 12 children ★★½ = 10 children
bar chart: apples 8, bananas 5, pears 11
pears − bananas = 6
🖼️ See it
6 and 12 are in both sets, so they go in the overlap. Numbers in neither set go outside the circles.Pears have the tallest bar. There are 11 − 5 = 6 more pears than bananas.
🔵 Venn and Carroll diagrams
A Venn diagram sorts things into circles. Things that belong to both groups go in the overlap; things in neither go outside. A Carroll diagram is a table that sorts by two yes-or-no questions, so every item goes in exactly one box.
Numbers 1–12: multiples of 2 and multiples of 3
only 2: 2, 4, 8, 10
both (overlap): 6, 12
only 3: 3, 9
neither: 1, 5, 7, 11
Check each item against both rules before you decide where it goes.

🌡️ Negative Numbers & Coordinates
Numbers carry on below zero, like temperatures on a cold day. Coordinates use numbers to find places on a grid.
🌡️ Below zero
Negative numbers are less than zero, such as −3 (“negative three”). On a number line they sit to the left of zero. The further left, the smaller the number: −8 is colder than −3. To add, count right; to subtract, count left, going through zero.
4 − 7 = −3 (4 → 0 is 4 steps, 3 more steps → −3)
−5 → 3 is a rise of 8 degrees
order: −6, −2, 0, 3
🖼️ See it
Counting back 7 from 4 goes through zero and lands on −3.For (2, 3) go 2 across, then 3 up.
📍 Coordinates
A coordinate such as (4, 1) gives a position on a grid. The first number tells you how far across; the second tells you how far up. Start from the origin, the corner where the axes meet at (0, 0).
(4, 1) → 4 across, 1 up
